With the inside nearly finished, I decided it was time to turn my attention to the outside walls. I wanted stone blocks to ground floor ceiling level, and bricks above.
To make the blocks, I collected egg boxes, and painted the inside of the lids with several coats of cream craft acrylic paint. I then cut them into oblongs.
For the bricks, I used the method described in my
I finished off the walls with white painted corner stones and other trim. The white triangle was the size of the original roof, you can see how much bigger the new attic is. The sides of the attic are covered with card slates, which I made using the comb method.
I added corner stones to the front of the building, and dentil moulding between the top sales floor and the attic offices, to match the sides. The attic also has new lights, which makes a big improvement.
As I don't want to use the frontage that came with the kit, I've found a huge sheet of clear plastic which I'll drape over the front to keep the dust out, it will be a lot easier to remove than a three foot square sheet of Perspex.
Just a few more shelves and some stock to make, and Anderson's Emporium will be finished.
I'm already planning my next project - a replica of the 1930s terrace house where I was born. I'm going to build this from scratch, and it will be set on Coronation Day, 1953.
